What Side of Your Family Does Baldness Come From

HISTORY tells us that thick, luscious locks are seen as a sign of good health and youth, especially for men.

But some men experience hair loss known as male pattern baldness, common across the world, and here's all you need to know about this genetic issue.

What is male pattern baldness?

Male pattern hair loss primarily affects the front and top of the scalp, and often presents itself as a receding hairline or thin hair on the top of the head.

The hair loss is due to a combination of genetics from your parents and the productions of hormones inside your body, and it affects around two thirds of all men.

The hair loss is caused when the hair follicle in the head shrinks, which is a natural process of ageing, until the hairs become so short and fine that they no longer grow.

Having a family history of baldness increases the likelihood of developing the pattern, but the condition is entirely normal and nothing to worry about.

Is hair loss inherited from your mum or dad?

The primary gene in charge of baldness is passed on from mothers through the X chromosome - meaning a child will follow their mothers side of the family.

But both sides of the family will pass down genes that will affect hair loss,  despite the hereditary factors being more dominant for the mother's side.

Men who have bald fathers are more likely to bald themselves compared to those who don't, but just because someone in your family is bald does not mean that you will be too.

What are the early signs of pattern baldness?

The first thing to look our for is a receding hair line, which is when the hair starts to thin at the temples and front hair line creating an 'm' shape on the head.

Another common sign of pattern baldness is a thinning crown, and for most this is the most recognisable sign of balding, where an area of hair is beginning to thin.

Though it might not be true of all men, having curly hair over the ears and on the neck can also be a sign of thinning hair.

The majority of men will start to see baldness on the top of their head in patches, so if hair begins to fall out from this place, it can be a tell-tale sign.

If you want to know more about how to prevent balding, this new shampoo contains a drug for brittle bones that could 'cure baldness in days'.

Also, a new drug known as WAY-216606 could be the new 'cure' for baldness and help with hair loss.
